Research
I have several major research projects currently in progress. The first, in collaboration with Professor Sarah Iverson, exploits globally representative data to gain a better understanding of the barriers to migration for those who aspire to migrate, with resources and human capital proving crucial. Relatedly, Professor Iverson and I also explore the drivers of migration aspirations in lower income countries, which vary greatly by conditions of health and violence. Professor Iverson and I are also in the process of writing a book on cable news coverage of the U.S.-Mexico border from 2010-2024, highlighting the role of President Trump in altering this coverage both quantitatively and qualitatively, and the impact this may have had on public opinion toward immigration. Lastly, along with Meaghan Tomasiewicz, I am analyzing data on racial disparities in student visa rejections in the U.S., finding evidence of discrimination against applicants from predominantly Black and Muslim nations in particular.
