Christopher Maggio

Hello, I'm Christopher Maggio, a sociologist and criminologist with a focus on race and immigration. I earned my Ph.D. in Sociology from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. I currently serve as an Assistant Professor in the Criminal Justice Program at Mercy University as well as the Program Director for the M.S. Program in Criminal Justice.

My primary research interests are around race and immigration using quantitative methods. My dissertation examined the impact of recent racial demographic changes at the local level on voting outcomes, immigration attitudes, and perceptions of racism. Other published work includes research on the impact of “crimmigration” laws on Latino social life and the context of immigration in the American South. More recent work has addressed racial hierarchy in immigration attitudes and public opinion on “open borders," with cross-national comparisons to come.

I am currently working on projects on barriers to migration, heterogeneity in migration aspirations in lower income countries, and racial discrimination in student visa applications. Along with Professor Sarah Iverson, I am working on a book project that examines cable news coverage of the U.S.-Mexico border in the pre- and post-Trump eras and its impact on public opinion toward immigration.

My work has been published in journals such as Social Science Research, the Du Bois Review, Racial and Ethnic Studies, Daedalus, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Feel free to explore my publications and current projects. I'm open for academic collaborations and media inquiries.
